The Benefits of Tree Mulching

When it comes to tree maintenance, we often advise our clients to mulch their trees to improve their health and appearance. Mulch is a layer of organic material that covers the roots of trees and provides many benefits.

Today, we will discuss the benefits of mulching trees and how to do it properly.

What Are the Benefits of Tree Mulching?

Benefits of Mulching Trees

Mulching provides many benefits to trees, including:

Moisture Retention

Mulch helps retain moisture around tree roots, which is especially important in hot, dry weather.

Soil Temperature Control

Mulch helps regulate soil temperature, keeping it cool in summer and warm in winter.

Weed Growth Inhibition

Mulch inhibits weed growth around trees, reducing competition for nutrients and water.

Reduces Soil Erosion

Mulch helps reduce soil erosion around tree roots.

Improves Soil Structure

As mulch decomposes, it adds organic matter to the soil, improving its structure and nutrient content.

There are many types of mulch you can use on trees, including:

Wood Chips: Wood chips are a popular form of tree mulch. They are readily available and break down slowly.

Chopped Leaves: Chopped leaves make a great mulch for trees. They break down quickly, adding nutrients to the soil.

Pine Needles: Pine needles are a common mulch for acid-loving trees like pine and spruce.

If you live in the City of Edmonton, we recommend taking advantage of their free mulch program.

How to Mulch Trees

When mulching trees, keep the following in mind to make sure you’re doing it right:

  1. Start with a clean base: Remove any weeds or grass from around the base of the tree before mulching.
  2. Apply a layer of mulch: Spread a layer of mulch around the base of the tree. The layer should be about 2-4 inches deep.
  3. Don’t Pile Mulch on Trees: Be careful not to pile mulch on tree trunks. This causes moisture to accumulate and promotes disease.
  4. Leave a gap: Leave a gap between the mulch and the trunk. This gap should be about 2-3 inches wide.
  5. Reapply regularly: Coverage degrades over time, so it’s important to reapply regularly.  Try to recover every year.

In conclusion, mulching trees has many benefits, including retaining moisture, controlling soil temperature, suppressing weed growth, reducing soil erosion, and improving soil structure. When mulching, it is important to choose the right type of mulch, apply it correctly, and reapply it regularly.
